Skegness Poppy Display Aims to Set New Guinness World Record

The Skegness branch of the Royal British Legion sets its sights on a new Guinness World Record, presenting an awe-inspiring display of over 80,000 handcrafted poppies. Set to be unveiled this Saturday at Skegness’ Altitude 44 – a high-altitude adventure facility, the installation significantly surpasses last year’s exhibition at the local clock tower.

The poppies, predominantly knitted or crocheted and some made from the bottoms of plastic bottles, will be affixed to nets and raised high onto the impressive 21-metre structure. Generous contributions for this ambitious project have streamed in from all over the world, with some generous individuals creating thousands of these poppies.

Adding to the spectacle, the public can expect a live rendition by the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Concert Band, a bugler from the regiment, and a parade featuring cadets and students. The Skegness Academy will also present a full-sized model of a War Horse, amplifying the poignant tribute.

There will be a few noteworthy attendees at the event, such as Mark Atkinson, the Director General of the Royal British Legion, and Eve Lister. Lister recently had the honour of presenting her uniquely crafted poppy to King Charles. The clock tower will begin its own poppy display from Friday night in parallel to this event.
